About ESOL Program

The JCH offers free English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs to immigrants from around the world.

The JCH offers free English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) programs to immigrants from around the world. Our classes follow best practices in the field of ESOL and other adult education instruction and are consistently ranked among the top programs in the state of New York.

Serving over 1,200 people per year from Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island, our student body is religiously, ethnically, and culturally diverse. Among more than 25 native countries represented in our classes are the former Soviet Union, China, Israel, Turkey, Japan, Bulgaria, Poland, the former Yugoslavia, Venezuela, Ecuador, Brazil, Egypt, Albania, and Pakistan.

The program’s curricula and instruction are based on research and effective educational practices related to the development of literacy skills in adult learners. Marks JCH’s research-based instructional strategies focus on building and developing motivation, knowledge, and experience and providing a real-world context for literacy activities in class to achieve performance targets. In addition to the basic blocs of ESOL/ABE instruction (reading, writing, numeracy, grammar, comprehension, conversation, fluency building, pronunciation), the Marks JCH leads activities that focus on building vocational and parenting skills, competing in the workplace, participating in community life, practicing citizenship, health literacy, and financial literacy.

The program promotes the use of new technologies and emphasizes civics, citizenship, job preparation training, technology training, and computer literacy.

The Marks JCH adult literacy program offers three levels of computer classes to the program participants. These classes cover basic computer skills, as well as more complicated skills, such as working with Microsoft Office and managing images. Whether students are entirely new to computing or have some experience, this curriculum will help to develop a fundamental understanding of computers. From using the internet to sending an e-mail or creating a resume, the class helps people to develop the essential skills to begin computing with confidence.

The use of IPads, laptops and Smart Boards enables instructors to customize lessons and activities, so students could learn what they are interested in while working at their own pace and level. Our theme-based, technology-integrated curriculum gives the students the skills and independence to access the most up-to-date information while learning important computer literacy and English language skills.
